Plantation forestry is still fairly recent in South East Asia when compared with some other parts of the world. Nursery and silviculture technologies can not be directly transferred from temperate regions as for any industrial production. Biological material requirements can only be investigated in situ, taking into consideration the interactions with soil, climates, pathogenic and symbiotic microorganisms. This project aims at extending our understanding and potential use of the mycorrhizal symbiosis in mixed Dipterocarp - Acacia mangium forest plantations, integrating a high value, slow growing, indigenous timber crop with a fast-growing, short rotation, nitrogen fixing, exotic legume species. This project also aims to determine whether such silviculture can be applied for the rehabilitation of heavily degraded forest and agricultural lands as tin tailings resulting from tin mining activities and degraded non-productive grasslands (imperata grass) needing immediate revegetation.
